My New Year’s (Blogging) Resolutions

So, I had several “resolutions” that I wanted to make this year, and I thought I might try to post the ones that pertained to this blog on here. I guess I’m hoping in some way that posting it for the masses to read will help make me more accountable in some way.

1.)  I resolve to blog more regularly.
Methods to achieve:
a.) Prepare posts in advance/have several posts ready for when I’m not able to prepare a post.
b.) Setup a posting schedule (ie. Reviews on Tuesday and Thursday and then something on Saturday)

2.) I resolve to carry around less stuff with me.
For the past several years, I have constantly carried around a backpack full of stuff with me. THe main reason for this was because of school, then having ot carry my laptop around with me (which I use everyday). Now, that’s not really my problem. My problem lies in the fact that in addition to my laptop and power cable, I have also been carrying 3-5 notebooks, a padfolio, camera, tripod, 30-40 pens (no joke, lol), a reporters notebook, planner, mouse and mouse pad, external hard drive, and a host of other things. While some of these items are necessary, most of them are not. So, I plan to reduce the amount of stuff I carry with me significantly.
Methods to achieve:
a.) Cut down the amount of stuff I carry.
b.) Carry only the pens that will fit in my Nomadic Side Pocket Pencil Case (10-20 pens)
c.) Carry only my padfolio (with Doane Paper of course), 1 notebook, and my Exacompta Journal 21 Planner
That should help me cut down on a lot of my carry-on weight…

Now, the question is… Can I do it?

Pentel Tradio Gel Pen Body/Back From Vacation

So, I’m officially back from vacation (one day later than planned)! We had a great time at North Myrtle Beach, even though it was cold. We stayed in the Prince Resort, which afforded us a 3 bedroom/3 bath suite for little more than $100 a night (November – February is the slow season for the beach, and you can even rent suites by the month for as little as $500-600), and we had an awesome ocean-front view. Click here for tons of sunrise pictures.

Now, for today’s review, we have the Pentel Tradio Energel Body. While the ink refill is one that we know and have grown to love, the body is a different critter altogether. The Tradio brand is originally a fountain pen with a plastic nib, allowing you to create various line widths, but in this instance from JetPens.com, the Tradio body has been redesigned to fit the Energel refills.

The body is smooth, and while the color is listed as grey, it’s really more of a slate or grey-brown. It literally is still the same as the original Tradio body, down to the window showing what normally would be the plastic fountain tip. The grip is a semi-transparent plastic which is grooved and actually relatively comfortable to use, even though it’s hard and not gel.

Merry Christmas!

From my family to yours,
In this busy time of year,
Wishes of goodwill and peace,
And the best of cheer.

For centuries ago,
One dark, cold night,
In a stable so low,
Was born Heaven’s Light.

Not of gret estate,
But of lowest born,
The King of Glory,
Only to be scorned.

Perfect among men,
Sinless and without blame,
In wisdom and power,
The son of God came.

Upon a cruel cross,
Our sins gladly bore,
So that man might be saved,
And live forevermore.

So in this time of love,
In the cheer of the season,
Let’s not forget,
That Christ is the reason.

I truly do wish you and your family the best this Christmas season, but I do pray that we not forget the true reason for the season. Even the very name (which many are now trying to stamp out) of Christmas tells of the reason we celebrate and commemorate the birth of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

In this season of hustle and bustle, many forget to stop and remember that 2,000 years ago, the King of Glory came to earth to be born miraculously of a virgin in order to bring salvation from sin and eternal life back to fallen mankind. While in this day and age, many people discredit His deity or consider Him just a great man (putting Him in the same group as Ghandi and Mother Teresa) or a prophet, my hope is in the truth that He is the Son of God, sent down to man to bring salvation, forgiveness, and redemption.

But, this young child laying in the manger, could he truly be the Messiah? Emmanuel? Yes, He was… Such is the reason that we celebrate this holiday, this Christmas, and the reason that I wish you not a Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings, not a Happy Non-offensive Holiday, but a Very Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Where Is He?

A decent question in all reality… At this moment, I am at North Myrtle Beach, in South Carolina! My family decided to vacation down here for Christmas, and I promised not to spend all my time holed up reviewing pens and notebooks, so I’m just holding off for a bit (again)… Although, there’s no stipulation about buying things to review, so, hopefully, expect to see some more new stuff in the coming days!

Pentel Sunburst Metallic Pink Medium Gel Pen

Pentel Sunburst Metallic Pink Medium Gel Pen

Today, I have a pen that I received in a Thanksgiving Giveaway from Pentel. While pink is not at all my color (I usually give all my pink and purple pens to my girlfriend), I thought I might at least give this gel pen a quick look and tell you guys what I thought.

As I mentioned the pen writes with a glittery metallic pink ink. The pen body itself is actually (as far as I know) a RVSP in pink with a gel refill. The grip is comfortable (and looks just like the RSVP), and the only problem I really had with this pen (other than the pink) was the fact that it was a little scratchy, especially for a medium (about a 1.0 mm) pen. Still, pretty decent, since it was a freebie… 😉

Daycraft “Make My Day” 2011 Diary

Daycraft “Make My Day” 2011 Diary

So, for my first review coming back from finals week, I bring you a product straight from the shores of distant Hong Kong. Ok, so it really only took it a couple days to get here, compared to the months that it once took to get anything from the “Far East”, so I’m not going to complain. This review, as well as all the other Daycraft products seen in coming weeks, were provided to me by the gracious Mr. Foreal Lee, Retail and Marketing Manager at Tai Shing Diary Limited, the parent company of Daycraft.

So, a little bit of information about Daycraft. Their website states that Tai Shing Diary was founded in 1988 and that over the years they have won a well-deserved reputation for getting things right. These Chinese-produced diaries focus on quality as well as usability. Each year, two new “collections” of diaries are produced, one for the corporate consumer, and another for the mass consumers. They also attempt to make sure that all the information in their diaries (more on that later) is accurate and up-to-date at the time of printing. Last but not least, their “Goal is to bring you even more innovative, practical and attractive diary and planner products. At Daycraft, we make your day.”

So, from Daycraft, we have their “Make My Day” diary. This beautiful, fine cloth-covered, black diary has a ton of features inside just waiting to be explored! According to the information that Mr. Lee sent me, the paper included is 70gsm cream woodfree paper (which, I found out, is paper based on chemical pulp, which has had most of the lignin removed and separated from the cellulose fibers). While this paper doesn’t really feel like 70 gsm, the truth is apparent in the bleedthrough tests where only the sharpies, rollerballs, and a bit of the fountain pens bleed through the page. So, for the record, while the pages are smooth, I would stick to pencils, ballpoints, and gel pens for use in these diaries.

Now, for what’s actually on the pages. One of the most interesting things I noticed about this diary was the fact that the “personal information” was placed at the back of the book, rather than the front. The first printed page in the book is actually a small four-year calendar showing 2010-2013. The next spread lists major international holidays for a host of countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China (3 different regions), Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, UK, and the US). Directly following that are page after page of “international guides” for each of the mentioned countries, which include pertinent information such as currency, phone networks, VAT, electricity supply, etc. Also at the end of this section is a world time chart, which allows you to easily calculate the current time anywhere in the world. The next section in this information-filled diary is the IDD codes, which contains all the telephone dialing codes as well as some specific area codes for each country. Next come the conversion tables, everything you’ll need to convert from standard measure to metric. Finally, we once again reach the planner section.

First off, we have a monthly planner for 2011. There are two months on each page, which doesn’t leave you with much space to write in, but you can fill in pertinent future appointments. One of the interesting things about this diary was the placement of a “cover page” on each month. THese are all artistic in design and in some way spell out “Make my Day”. The adjoining page is ruled and features a small monthly calendar (assumedly to be used to write down important dates to remember for that particular month). The actual planner itself is a week-spread planner, featuring the first three days of the week on the first page and the other four on the second page (Saturday and Sunday are half-coulmns). Each day has the date, followed by any holidays, followed by ruled lines to write down your life. Also, in the upper right hand corner of each page is another mini calendar of the current month.

Toward the end of the diary, we hit another yearly planner, termed a “Forward Planner” for 2010. Two months on each page again leave you with not much space to write in. Following the “Forward Planner” is a cash flow table, an address book, and finally, the personal memoranda (personal information) section. The last several pages of the book are detachable memos (3 perforated memos per page), which I used to do my ink test.

All in all, this is a beautiful little book from Daycraft, and while I was disappointed in the way the paper handled liquid inks, it’s still a functional planner that I would easily recommend to anyone looking to plot out their life.

Note: I am not an employee nor and I am in any way affiliated with Daycraft or Tai Shing Diary. This review and my opinions of this product is in no way affected by the fact that this item was a free sample from Daycraft.

Guest Review: J. Herbin Rouge Bourgogne

Today, we have a guest review from a new pen friend over at Economy Pens! Alex is a pen blogger “on a tight budget”, so he “has to get his pen fix witha ffordable pens”. I ran into Alex when he won one of my contests, and I quickly added him to my blogroll. He’s also got a Sheaffer Fountain Pen Giveaway going on too, so you’d better run over there and check that out as well (not before you read his review though)! So, for our first review coming back from finals week, I give you Alex’s opinion on this beautiful ink:

J. Herbin – Rouge Bourgogne

I don’t typically go for inks that are in the pink spectrum, but this one was selected for the purpose of writing love letters and poems, so I think it is quite fitting in that respect. The ink is well-behaved and does not feather in my 21 x 29.7 cm Rhodia notebook. The paper is 80g, and there is no bleed-through on the other side of the paper.

As you can (hopefully) see in the image, there is a lot of shading with this ink, which is a characteristic that I almost always enjoy. For this sample, I used a Lamy Joy with a 1.5 mm calligraphy nib. A 1.5 mm nib obviously puts down a lot more ink, so you may notice that the ink appears lighter if you use a smaller nib. I had also tried to use my J. Herbin glass dip pen to do this review, but I need to get some sand paper to smooth out the rather scratch tip that it came with. Either way, if you like inks that are a darker pink, you will almost certainly enjoy the J. Herbin Rouge Bourgogne.

For another review of this ink, check out the review done by Our Lady of Shadows on The Fountain Network.

And Here We Are…

Well, just thought I might hop on and explain the lack of posts for this week… It’s college finals week at my school, which atuomatically means incessant stressing and not much time for “playing around” (as my mom likes to put it). So, I’m cracking the books and consuming large amounts of caffeinated beverages this week and I’ll be back to my regular schedule soon. 🙂
