Today’s post is just a short review of a pen set I found around Christmas time. This JML Classic Pen set just kind of called my name as I passed it while walking through the aisles of Kmart, and it was only $15.00 (plus it was an “as seen on TV” product), so I scooped it up. The set includes 5 different pens, which includes a micro ball point, 0.5mm “propelling pencil”, two-color pen, ballpoint, rollerball, and a fountain pen with an “virtually indestructable nib” (and yes, they do have a video showing them using it as a dart and other “impossible” feats at http://www.chia.com), as well as as a 66 piece refill kit (30 pieces of which is the lead for the pencil).
As for the pens themselves… They’re actually not that bad (Wait! Hear me out before you call me a heretic!)… For the money. Am I saying that I love them and that I want to use them every day until I die? No… But, as a set of pens to use at my desk at work where I’m constantly afraid of people stealing my good pens, these are a perfect fit. First, they’re a set, and if anyone else winds up with one and that one happens to be missing from mine, that’s pretty damning evidence in my book.
The pens are crafted from brushed stainless with “gold” what appears to be brass accents. The ballpoints are a little scracthy, but no worse than your everyday Bic pen. The “propelling pencil” is standard. The rollerball is standard, although I do like the fact that there is a spring behind the refill that actually gives the pen some firm bounce and feedback as you write. The fountain pen is actually decent for a cheap pen with an “virtually indestructible nib” (and no I didn’t and am not going to test that claim). As I mentioned, not the best set of pens I’ve ever seen, but still not bad either, especially for $15.00.
Now, on to the other business of the day. I’ve decided to set up a schedule for posting, rather than just random posting whenever I get the time. So, from now on (at least until I get sick of it), there will be regular posts on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. That doesn’t mean I’ll not be posting at all in between, but just that I will have posts scheduled and ready to go on each of those days (ie. there’s a Rhodia review scheduled for tomorrow morning at 7:30 EST). Sound like a plan? Let me know what you think in the comments section below!

I reviewed this same set (not nearly as well as you did) last year – only I paid $5 more. Ah well.
Yes, I found they are a pretty good set of pens. The fountain pen, while it writes wet and too broad for me, has terrible ink. But that is easily corrected using international cartridges and better ink. Maybe someday I’ll look for a converter to use in it.
I’m glad you did this post. I think I’ll dig mine out and use them at work, too.

So does the fountain pen come with a converter or is it cartridge only? Does it take international carts? If I’m seeing it correctly, the carts it comes with look tiny. I remember seeing the commercial for this pen set and thought the fountain pen would probably be terrible for the price. Good to know that it’s not in case I ever receive this as a gift or something. 🙂

Hey JoniB, thanks for commenting! I agree, the fountain pen is a bit wet and the ink is pretty bad, but… Still not a bad value for the price… Mind linking to your review? I wouldn’t mind reading it… 🙂
Hey Derek, the fountain pen doesn’t come with a converter, but I’m sure any “international cartridge” converter would work (at least I hope, lol)…

It was one of my first product reviews and is quite shaky. Anyway, thanks for this post! I put the case in my backpack to take to work.

I think all those seasonal “As Seen on TV” products are! Can you just imagine what that would look like? Ha-ha!

well I like this pen I bought few as a gift. I found that the “The pens are crafted from brushed stainless with “gold” . yap the paint comes off. which makes it a bit agly. and one of my pen leaks… everytime i put the carreage, it leaks and make a mass in the lid. I am trying with another set I have if it leaks too. but other than that this pen is the one of the best pen I ever used. and can any tell me what they mean by converter?

I have just open my Christmas gift and open my pen set. My Micro pen is broken. It seem the part where the ink pen goes in to the pen has broke off in the cap of the pen:) My Fountain pen tends to leak.. On the two color pen my blue ink works fine but the other color does not so I changed out. So far its been ok but I wish all the pens worked better.. May be I just got the one set that was defective.

Hi, does anyone know for sure what ink cartridge I could use to refill the fountain pen since all of mine are finished from the set. Thanks in advance 🙂

Sorry to have to tell you that no one really
knows what type of ink cartridge is used
in the JML fountain pen. It seems that
JML keeps it secret in a Bank vault so that nobody will ever find out. It’s a bit like the
11 secret herbs and spices in KFC or the secret formula for Coca Cola.
Hope this helps.
